The art of doing nothing and why it's so important in the 21st century
It is almost impossible to be bored in the 21st century.
There is ALWAYS something to do.
Scrolling social media, watching netflix, watching youtube, whatever. It’s constant dopamine 24/7.
For 99% of people, the first and last thing they do in the day is scroll their phone.
It has never been more important to learn the art of doing nothing.
All the great thinkers throughout history never had 24/7 access to entertainment. You ever think Issac Newton would have payed the smallest bit of attention to the apple falling on his head if he had sat with a phone scrolling tiktok. I don’t think so.
“All of humanity’s problems stem from our inability to sit quietly in a room alone” - Blaise Pascal
Bro said this in the 17th century, imagine if he had seen the world today with all the instant dopamine we have access to.
When you are done reading this, I want you to sit in silence for 10 minutes. Don’t look at your phone, literally don’t do anything. Just close your eyes, and be in the present moment.
True creativity comes in the moment when you aren’t doing anything, when you are doing nothing.
Busyness is the enemy of spirituality and you will ever uncover what your heart is telling you if you never listen to it.
I know this sounds like some monk shit but trust me. Everybody is so stressed out all the time, because they don’t know what they want to do in life, they don’t don’t know what they are interested in, they don’t know anything because they are so caught up in their phones and other forms of entertainment. They never actually gives their brain time to relax and just think about thinking.
We are simple beings, and our monkey brains aren’t wired to be thinking about stuff 24/7 that doesn’t concern us right now.
Like Noah Ryan would say, you need to be pondermaxxing.
Go for walks without your phone, without music, just you and your thoughts.
Meditate.
Sit on the toilet without your phone.
Whenever you have a moment where you aren’t doing anything, resist the urge to pick up the instant dopamine hit aka your phone.
They want you constantly stimulated so you just live life on autopilot, but it’s your job to resist that urge if you want to be anything other than ordinary.
Now go sit in silence for 10 minutes without any distractions.
And remember that the key to all your problems is doing nothing, paradoxically.
Thanks for reading and godspeed.
